Electronics giants team for wireless HD

OCT. 31 7:48 A.M. ET The world's leading electronics makers have teamed up to develop a wireless technology to carry high-definition video and eliminate some of the cable spaghetti that links televisions with set-top boxes and other equipment.

Seven companies were to announce Tuesday that they formed the WirelessHD Consortium to free high-definition TVs from the tangle of cables connected to cable or satellite boxes, gaming consoles, DVD players, or even camcorders and other portable multimedia gadgets.

The companies are LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., known for its Panasonic brand, NEC Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Sony Corp., and Toshiba Corp., as well as SiBEAM Inc. a wireless technology startup.

Industry analysts predicted the first products to carry the WirelessHD technology won't hit the market until at least 2008.But unlike the challenges other emerging wireless formats face in gaining market traction, "the fact that WirelessHD has the backing of all the major electronics companies gives it a leg up," said Brian O'Rourke, a senior analyst at research firm In-Stat/MDR.

The format is designed to work within ranges of up to 32 feet -- and within the same room -- using the 60-gigahertz radio frequency band, said John Marshall, chairman of WirelessHD.

It will transmit high-definition video that has not been compressed digitally so users should experience the same image quality they currently get with wired HD-capable video connectors.

The WirelessHD group has been working quietly for more than a year and aims to have the technical specifications completed next spring. It intends to integrate the technology into HDTVs and a range of other audio-video equipment, as well as make it compatible with other wireless and wired video formats, Marshall said.

The consortium also expects adapters will be made so consumers with older model DVD players or set-top boxes can have the option of wireless connectivity with their HDTV sets, he said.

"In the last few years, the number of digital devices has really just amplified, and consumers are looking for a way to simply manage this A-V network," Marshall said. "This can get rid of both the spaghetti in the front and back of the television."

Transmitting HD video seamlessly and wirelessly requires a large amount of radio bandwidth and poses technical issues involving picture quality and interference.

Though WirelessHD hasn't released full details of how its technology will work, the consortium claims it will deliver high-definition video at multi-gigabit data rates -- faster than any other radio technology in development.

Making a wireless technology affordable enough for manufacturers -- and their customers -- could be yet another obstacle.

A few chip-maker startups, such as Radiospire Networks Inc., Tzero Technologies and Pulse-LINK Inc., are using a different radio technology to develop products to stream high-definition video wirelessly, O'Rourke said, but the adapter-like devices expected to use their wireless chips will likely cost several hundred dollars.

"WirelessHD says it is targeting a low-cost solution, but we'll have to see," O'Rourke said. "Adding a couple of bucks (to the manufacturing cost) is a lot of money already."

So Many Free TV Episodes and Movies, So Little Time

I’ve just recently discovered Dailymotion. If I thought that once I was blind (a previous post), now I’m positive. I’m not really sure how I missed it exactly, but somehow I always referred to it as YouTube wannabe and didn’t pay too much attention to it. But Dailymotion is different. It has so much more illegal content there. YouTube is working really fast in deleting the illegal clips, while Dailymotion and many others are taking their time, not rushing to stop their traffic and cash flow. But, as always, it’s a game between the law and the surfers, mouse and cat, David and Goliath.

If you go through the following sites, you will have a chance to watch full TV episodes from Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Lost, The Office, That 70’s Show, Scrubs, Band of Brothers, South Park, Punk’d and movies like Click, Ice Age, Jackass, The Island, Hostel, Four Brothers and many many many more.

Some of the epsiodes work, some of the episodes don’t. Some videos can be downloaded directly, some videos needs the use of sites like keepvid and some videos can’t be downloaded (they’re streamed). But all in all most of the videos in the sites I linked to are working perfectly.

1. TV-Fusion -  offers a variety of great shows - South Park, Futurama, The Simpsons, American Dad, That 70’s Show, That’s my Bush, Punk’D, Scrubs and an amazing list of many movies - comedy (with stuff like Click, Ice Age, Dogma, Scary Movie, Clerks 2, 50 First Dates and Talladega Nights), horror (with Sin City, V for Vandetta, Saw and Hostel), action (like Four Brothers, Batman Begins, Snakes on a Plane, MI3 and The Island) and you can also visit the other movies category.

2. Rape the Web is a nasty name for a site, but I guess what they’re doing is pretty nasty (they also have sex passwords, if anyone is interested). They basically have the same movies and TV shows to offer as TV-Fusion from above and in some cases they even do it better.

3. Dailymotion Favorites - you can find some really great movies and episodes, if you just follow the right person in Dailymotion. Dailymotion users can create their own playlists using the movies on site and bookmark the videos they like. TheWalkingDude, for example, has links to Smurfs episodes (!), Transformers, The Simpsons and many others (usually not full seasons, only a few episodes from each show). If you go to pig2cat page on Dailymotion, you could start watching the full show of Band of Brothers and if you go to BGRTRob page, you can view 15 full episodes of Seinfeld.

4. Tv-Nation has the regular TV series to offer plus a few extras, like Lost (all Epsiodes aired so far), My Name is Earl, Prison Break, The Office and the same movies as the above has to offer.

5. Findago has a very simple interface and it works perfectly, but it has very little to offer compared to the above and nothing new to add.

6. My Fav Eps is also pretty much the same, although it looks like it’s constantly being updated and checked for broken links. Maybe this will be a better site to check when all others will start failing one by one.

7. Last, but certainly not least, is the famous peekvid that offers variety of shows, anime, comedy, films, music clips with a very slick interface and extremely easy to use. The movies are mostly located on YouTube and some of the links don’t work, but the variety is amazing and there’s definitely something there to watch anytime of the day.
