Khemara was one of the first Cambodian organizations to provide
emergency shelter and counseling to women and their families. The program
is less than one year old but has gained a reputation as a safe
haven. The emphasis so far has been on training village volunteers
in basic counseling and intervention skills but already the shelter
has housed women victims of domestic violence, prostitution, rape
and border returnees. The shelter is small and can only hold 7
families at a time. Funding is still uncertain despite the great
need for this service. It is clear that more volunteers will soon
be needed to meet the great need.
Other village volunteers work as
physical therapists to help polio and land-mine victims.
To help pay for the
rehabilitation activities they make paper and paper products.
