As it appears relatively in all Cambodia regimes constitution as “the official language and script are Khmer.” Some foreign and alike historians arbitrarily distorted facts and evidences that Khmer had mysteriously vanished. Some Siam and Lao scholars publicly repudiated not Khmer but Khorm was the original precursor and foundation of their present written forms. Truthfully, both are false.
Historically,Khmer-Mon race and language belonged to Austro Asiatic group in South Eastern Asia region. Present Cambodia population origin is Khmer one of the two oldest groups. As evidence, it was the dominant developed language in the region which millions of inhabitant of present western Siam plateau and Mekong delta of Co-Chin Chine still use it in their daily. The latter Mon is presently a state part of Myanmar federation.
More so, French historians and scholars explicitly acknowledged Khmer had developed written and spoken language and system of government centuries ago before present France had established its identity yet.Until today France still has no own but its ancient powerful colonial Roman letters. Ironically France had wanted to permanently replace Khmer with its own through its agents namely ” pseudo French intellectuals”.
That resonated the very century Khmer scholar namely Chuon Nath who inspired the entirety of Khmer national transformation. It was a personal diligence to rescue Khmer language from perishing at the works of colonials and collaborative agents. A son of rural-peasantry stock turned Buddhist monk who unselfishly spent most his lifelong encouraging Khmerization in both public educational and religious use. His astounding achievement was monumental and important to millions.
The perseverance and tenacity of the nationalist scholars paved way for Khmerization that became fully official in1969. It was a wakening and strong emergence which was a revolutionary purpose to revive national standard in Khmer literacy and language. Coincidentally Sihanouk removal had accelerated sense of pride and nationalism further into the true democratic trend inspired by republicanism.
Rancorously in protest, pseudo French families who alternatively sent their childen for education in France or other foreign after completing French Catholic or private schools in Cambodia. The frame of mind was Khmer not nearly good enough for their children. Beacuse of Khmerization impact, many known transcendental individuals of Khmer lineage staged personal insults or denigrations toward Abbot Chuon Nath. Yet through storms of Viets destruction and internal passive aggression, Khmer Republic forged it ahead regardless. Thus, Khmerization was more than the tantamounted task in language for the nation but the dignity of Khmer pride and unquestionable identity.
Of all revolutionaries, altruistically speaking he highly outstood the rest in his humanity, spirit, examplary, commitment, loyalty, and allegiance. He died in Khmer health professional hands not foreign without known demand of self-elevation or gratitude. He was a genuine spiritual leader in flesh. Present Cambodia had built monuments, parks, schools, hospitals to honor heinous criminals and hypocritical rulers but not this sage who was often forgotten. Officially, I think it is time the King II and extraordinaire Assembly III ought to nationally proclaim the national observance day in honor of his birthday as a true son with prolific service to his people.
In relation upon question ask what we can do, I suggest the least out of respect and love each of CAM-DISC participants probably can share nominal financial and educational responsibility to establish a memorial fund with an oversight committee to erect memorial site at his birthplace, and financed a central institution such as library or college of humanity and letters named after him. To honor and further his endeavours, the project of computer lab hooked up with cyber ability for the research study plus printing shop plus and a books bank. Collectively,I believe this probably a most decent thing that each can do to help our future scholars and generations aware of Khmer own genius and scholar.
My fellows, it would be ingrateful and irresponsible for the remaining genrational of his teachings taken no initiative to forcefully demand honor of the benovelence and true love of this giant of ours.As it seems good people is a rare breed in Cambodia anymore, we must help preserving his legacy and restore it in a rightful place in Cambodia history.
You can make a difference, please help.
